Guernica - 2018
Choreographic piece for 7 dancers
Directly inspired by Pablo Picasso's huge painting, Guernica features 7 dancers who embody the symbols used by the painter to represent the tragedy that took place in the village of the same name on April 26, 1937.
In the middle of a market day, the skies of the small Basque town of Guernica are covered with German and Italian planes, mandated by the Spanish nationalists to raze this village, which was emptied of soldiers. After a two-hour attack, the city was devastated, littered with hundreds of dead and wounded, men, women and children.
So in France, Picasso learned the drama through the newspapers. He will draw a monumental canvas, a huge cry of Cubist anger, populated by symbols.
At the crossroads of the history of art and artistic emotion, this 20-minute piece presents the main figures of Picasso's painting.. Each symbol comes alive to give to see and hear what it can suggest or embody. On stage are women: the mother carries her dead child; the imploring man looks at the sky and his village is engulfed in flames; The dominating bull embodies brutality and power; the horse symbolizes the twisted people of pain; the wounded dove carries the twig of peace; the flame brings a glimmer of hope under the gaze of the eye, witness to the disaster. Thanks to the emotion of the dance, each character will take the viewer through Picasso's lines.

As the painter abandoned the color, guided by the black and white photos of the disaster, the dancers are dressed in the same shade of grey that gives this massacre a timeless look.

« The audience, the spectators, must see in the horse, in the bull, the symbols they interpret as they see fit. There are animals: they are animals, animals slaughtered. » Pablo Picasso
